The Statue of Liberty is also known as Lady Liberty. Lady Liberty was a gift from France to United States on October 28, 1886.


The full name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World" 


Statue of Liberty represents the liberated Roman goddess of freedom. 


Edouard de Laboulaye, a French political thinker who dreamt of it.


Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, designed it. The face of Lady Liberty was modeled on the  face of Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's mother.
 



Gustave Eiffel built the integral metal of the statue. By the way, Eiffel is the same man who built the " Eiffel Tower".

Eiffel was the late-Comer to the project because before him Eugene Violet-Le-Duc was hired to build the statue, but unfortunately he died.

Lady Liberty is made up of 300 copper plates, which weigh 31 tons. To build the foundations, 125 tons of iron were used. The weight of the statue is about 225 tons. The waistline of the lady is 35 - foot. 

The length of Statue of Liberty is about 93m located on the island named "Bedloe's Island, in the upper New York Bay. 

There are 354 stairs to climb up the statue. 


The statue was transported from Paris to New York by the help of ship, named "Isere". 350 pieces of the statue were placed in the Ship because the length of the statue was quite long. 

The suffrage groups criticized the unveiling of the statue at that time, when American women were not allowed for the right of vote.

Both France and America spent $102,000 to build it. However, the total cost for the statue was almost $110 million.

All around the word there are 100 replicas of Lady Liberty; more than 30 statues are in France. There are many other names of statue of liberty as America's Freedom, Mother of Freedom, Lady on a Pedestal, Green Goddess, and Saint Liberty. 



The crown of the lady liberty 

The crown of the lady liberty contains the seven spikes; these spikes are made up of copper and steel . There are two schools of thought about the spikes one says, spikes represent the seven oceans and continents of the world, while the other says, spikes represent the rays of the sun and show that Lady Liberty is divine. 



The torch of lady liberty,

The torch of lady liberty represents the enlightenment. The torch of the statue lights the way of freedom for us . Statues complete name represents her most important symbol "Liberty Enlightening the World". However, the torch was damaged due to an explosion during World War in 2916. Total cost for the repair work is $100,000. After that torch remained closed to the public for ever.



The broken chain, 

A broken chain that lies in the feet of liberty Lady represents the broken shackles of oppression and tyranny.



Tablet in her left hand,

She is holding a tablet in her left hand, which marks July 4, 1776, on it. This date represents the independence date of America. Bartholdi chose this due to his close association with America.
